What Does a Notary Public Do? A Quick Guide for First-Time Clients

If you’ve ever been told to “get something notarized” and weren’t sure what that meant, don’t worry—you’re not alone. A notary public is a state-appointed official who helps prevent fraud by verifying identities and witnessing signatures on important documents.

Here’s how the process works step-by-step:

•  You contact a notary and schedule an appointment. This could be at an office, your home, a café, or any place that’s convenient if        you're using a mobile notary. When you meet, the notary will ask to see a valid photo ID to confirm your identity. Once

confirmed, the notary will review your document to make sure it’s complete but not signed yet.

•   You’ll sign the document in front of the notary. In some cases, the notary may ask you to verbally swear or affirm that the                     information is true.

•   Then, the notary adds their official seal and signature to the document, making it legally notarized. They may also record the

details of the notarization in a journal, depending on your state’s laws.

The entire process usually takes just a few minutes and gives your document added legal protection.
